Yesterday a team of Year 5 pupils took place in the first Malvern Schools Debate at St Matthias School. Our team was Isobel, Libby, Amelia and Steffi. They were all nervous as they had only had a short time to prepare their arguments and didn't know what to expect. However they did a brilliant job of proposing the motion 'Parents should choose their child's religion' and had well organised and persuasive arguments.
The other subjects debated included 'Charity should start at home' and 'The little things make a difference to the climate crisis.' All the schools' speakers had prepared interesting arguments for and against these motions and the whole morning was a great success.
We are hoping to organise more opportunities for in-school and inter-school debates in the future so that our pupils gain a rich experience of democracy and the debating process.
