Woodland School

Woodland School is an inspirational process and a vital part of the curriculum at Callow End School. It  offers learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences, in a beautiful natural environment which is part of our school grounds.

In Woodland School, children learn to take risks and learn to succeed with small, achievable tasks. They learn to manage their own risk levels to achieve personal safety. Woodland school also offers our children the chance to have moments of peace tranquility and calm during their busy school day. Opportunities for spiritual reflection are part of our woodland school experience and increase our pupils mental health and well-being.

Children learn best from first hand experiences. Exploring, playing and learning using a range of activities (both designed by the leader and instigated by the children themselves) is what Woodland School is all about. The children are encouraged to investigate and explore the natural surroundings while learning to respect all living things.

Dressing for Woodland School

It is important that all children have appropriate clothing suitable for all weather conditions. As the activities will be taking place outside, children should wear old, comfortable clothing which they can get muddy. We provide waterproof trousers for the children.

In the winter months, children will need to come prepared for each session with:

  • Old warm jacket/waterproof coat
  • Fleece/sweatshirt
  • Long, comfortable, warm trousers
  • Wellies

In the summer months, children will need to come prepared for each session with:

  • A waterproof coat
  • Sun hat/cap
  • A thin, long sleeved top
  • Long, comfortable trousers
  • Sturdy shoes/trainers

Worcester Woodland Explorers

We all enjoyed a truly wonderful two days with Worcester Woodland Explorers, and the buzz around school was unmistakable. The excitement was infectious, and it was heart-warming to see the children’s smiles as they embraced a wide variety of woodland activities.

Across the sessions, the children experienced hands-on learning and discovery. They learned how to build and light a campfire safely, before gathering around the flames to toast marshmallows, create gooey s’mores, and even pop corn over the fire – a highlight that had everyone smiling from ear to ear!

Creativity played a big part too. Using clay, the children carefully shaped their own woodland animals, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings. Meanwhile, the ever-popular mud kitchen became a hub of imagination, with children mixing, pouring, and creating all sorts of woodland potions and magical recipes.

Another valuable element of the experience was the opportunities the children were given to use real tools. With guidance and support, the children handled saws and hammers, gaining confidence and learning new practical skills in a safe environment. It was fantastic to see their determination and pride as they worked on small projects and discovered what they were capable of achieving.

The two days were filled with fun, laughter, and rich learning opportunities that gave the children new experiences and memories they will treasure throughout their time at Callow End.
