At Callow End, we build a foundation for love and learning by providing a welcoming, safe, supportive environment and have high aspirations for all our pupils. As part of this vision, we aim to ensure that our pupils receive the best possible education, through a maths curriculum which is rich, broad and balanced and includes a wide variety of learning opportunities. Through our teaching of maths, we inspire our pupils to and their families to have a positive attitude towards the subject and for them to see themselves as competent mathematicians.
We believe that ‘everyone can grow under the right conditions’. In mathematics, we advocate for this idea in believing that every child can be a confident, competent mathematician if they are given the right tools, time and explanation.
To achieve this, we follow a Teaching for Mastery approach, ensuring that all pupils develop a deep and secure understanding of concepts. They learn to ‘play’ with numbers, seeing mathematics as a creative and interconnected discipline rather than a series of processes. Through concrete and visual representations, we expose the structure of maths and encourage children to think deeply and explain their reasoning. Together, we build shared understandings and explore generalisations.
Our aim is for all children to become fluent mathematicians with increasing efficiency, who are able to reason and explain their thinking articulately and apply their knowledge to solve problems.
